Using my blog to try and make the world a better place. If I can help someone forget their troubles for a few minutes a day, it's all worth it.

Caterpillars and Huffy Bikes

In the early 70's, our family moved into a new house (we were always moving. As a kid I think I lived in 5 different places). Me and the kids across the street used to ride our bikes in my driveway. I had a "Huffy" bike. Anyone remember those? They were sort of like the first mountain bikes with the thick "knobby tires". And it had a big sort of plaque with a number 3 on the front between the handlebars, like a race car number (i really don't know why). I also had one of those really tall orange flags (like 6 feet tall) attached to the back of my bike. It kept falling off though. Dad could never get it to stay on. My friends and i used to lay caterpillars on my driveway and run over them on our Huffy bikes. I'll always remember their green innards that used to squirt out of their heads and back ends. Sometimes we would ride over them in really slow motion to elongate the process. My driveway looked like a war zone (for caterpillars, that is).

1974 Madness
(What were we thinking?????)

Back in late June of 1974, my grandfather Joe was employed as a custodian of a Taunton elementary school. Because school was almost out for the summer, the school system gave my grandfather three or four milk crates stocked with milk in those little milk cartons that were served at lunchtime. There must have been 60 or 80 of them, and my grandfather in turn gave them to my dad. Dad came home and they were back in the bed of his pick-up truck. He went inside, and me and my friends were hanging out outside. We ended up opening every single container and poured them into the bed of the pick up truck. We didn't tell him we did it, and it sat overnight and curdled. I've never smelled anything so bad. The truck stunk for over a week, to this day I can still smell it.

My Favorite Poem

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Robert Frost Posted by Picasa

Whose woods these are, I think I know
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near.
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep.
And miles to go before I sleep.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show Theme Song

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big,
girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

Memorable lines from 70's commercials

These are just a few that I remember:

  • "Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce. Special orders don't upset us. All we ask is that you let us serve it your way."
  • "You've got ring around the collar."
  • "You deserve a break today."
  • "When I bite into a York peppermint patty, I get the sensation of....."
  • "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!"
  • "Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!"" No, YOU got YOUR peanut butter in MY chocolate!"
  • "I'd like to build the world a home, and furnish it with love - grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I'd like to buy the world a coke and keep it company."
  • "Please don't squeeze the Charmin!"
  • "My baloney has a first name, it's O-s-c-a-r, my baloney has a second name it's M-e-y-e-r. Oh I love to eat it every day and if you ask me why I'll say, 'cause Oscar Meyer has a way with b-o-l-0-g-n-a! How's that?"
  • "You're soaking in it."-Madge from Palmolive
  • "Calgon, take me away!!!!!!"
  • "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never never never never let you forget you're a man, 'cause I'm a woman."
  • "Nothing gets between me and my Calvins."
  • "Hershey is the great American chocolate bar."
  • "Raisins, nature's candy."
  • "That's funny, Frank never has a second cup at home......"
  • "Lee-ee-ee-ee-ee-vi's!"
  • "Thanks, Mr. Easter Bunny!"
  • "With milk chocolate that melts in your mouth, not in your hands."
  • "Double your pleasure, double your fun."
  • "Just a sprinkle a day helps keep odor away."
  • "It's not NICE to fool Mother Nature!"
  • "Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weiner, that is what I'd truly like to be. For if I were an Oscar Meyer weiner, everyone would be in love with me."
  • "One day, I woke up with a big pimple, I was upset, I had to get, something with benzoyl peroxide, something strong, and something fast. Stridex BP was the thing for me! Stridex BP, it dried my pimple fast. Stridex BP (it works so hard), Stridex BP (it works so fffaaasssssstttttt!!!!!). Try it and you'll see that nothing beats Stridex BP!"

McDonald's promo glasses
(real glass before the days of lawsuits). Posted by Picasa

These glasses are circa 1976/77. McDonald's used to sell these, I think, for a dollar. Back in the day I had the hamburglar glass and the pirate (used to have. Not many people held on to these things). They stopped selling these types of glasses (real glass with painted images) after a few minor incidences of children being poisoned by the paint - another classic case of a few ruining it for the rest of us .. . . ......

This is the cabin on 51 acres i mentioned in my bio. I bought the property in May of this year. This is actually a log home built during the Civil War. The outside is just covered with siding and the joints are flush, not overlapping, so it doesn't look like a log home from the outside. Some of the logs are 18 inches square and my threshold is 16 inches wide. It has 3 bedrooms, a loft, and an open living space/kitchen/ dining downstairs.

If you're tired of the high priced housing market where you are, consider upstate New York. I paid $65,000 for this place (the above photo) and $25,000 on my 4br village home (my neighbor across the street paid $23,000 for theirs (4 bedrooms) and theirs is a bigger house. The people 2 doors down from me just paid $35,000 for theirs, and around the corner a family just paid 30,000 for theirs and their house is so big that they have a servant's stairway into the kitchen, as well as an adorable detached carriage house. Things are still affordable here. My mortgage on the village home comes out to about $12 a day.
