Peter Max

The art of Peter Max was HUGELY successful in the early to mid-70's. His impact on pop culture can not be overestimated, and he certainly has earned a significant place in art history.

The 2 works pictured are:
"Sunrise" 1976
"Discovery" 1992

There will never be another artist like him, he was (is) one-of-a-kind.

A 1976 Christmas

It was 1976, the Six Million Dollar Man was at the zenith of his popularity, and this was THE ONE present I HAD to have.... Mom would have come off looking pretty bad had she not pulled through.

The Bionic Man action figure was a HUGE success, and Maskatron was the coolest thing I had ever seen. He had interchangable body parts that would pop off when you pressed certain pressure points on the figure. He also had interchangeable face masks, so he could be 3 different people. I LOVED making his arms and legs pop off, and i also liked ripping his face mask off.

I've been trying to get one on ebay but keep getting outbid. If mom had known that one day, they would sell on the internet for $175 and up, she would have bought 40 of them instead of whining about "how hard it was to find", and "how she had to go to 4 different stores", and "go through gallons of gas just so I could have something to open Christmas morning", etc.

John Lennon

It's the 25th anniversary (yesterday was) since John Lennon was murdered.

I've heard alot about how great a humanitarian he was, and how he strived to make the world a better place for peace, etc. but I don't see it. The man who sang "All You Need Is Love" had millions of dollars in the bank. As far as I know he was not part of any humanitarian mission, didn't involve himself in charity events (free of charge or otherwise), and even for the photo posted, i'm sure he got paid. I never once saw him photographed participating in a peace march. As far as I know, he was an athiest: "Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try. No hell below us, above us only sky".

Everything he did was career-oriented, and everything came at a price - it was all fashion.

A total phony, I don't miss him.

Tony Orlando And Dawn

I used to watch their variety show in the early to mid-70's (who DIDN'T have a variety show back then???). Anyway, I knew who Tony Orlando was (obviously), but which one was Dawn? Why didn't the other chick rate name recognition???

My favorite songs were "Knock Three Times", and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" (a song about a prisoner wondering if his girlfriend would take him back after he was released. Gee, who wouldn't be waiting????? And, we never really knew what he was incarcerated for...).

It's interesting to note that their initials spelled 'TOAD'.

I just love these guys:

Peanuts is probably one of THE most successful comic strips ever. I don't think their appeal will ever die (well, for me anyway). You can check out their website at: http://snoopy.com/

Keep On Truckin

This was a popular phrase in the 70's. You would see it on bumper stickers, tee-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, etc.

To this day I have absolutely NO IDEA what this means, nor do I think anybody else did, either.

Reefer Madness

This illustration for Job Cigarette Papers was done by Alphonse Mucha in the late 1800's. Job is still selling cigarette papers to this day, but come on, who REALLY uses these for cigarette tobacco anymore???????

Once when i was 'using', i went to the local convenience store and said to the cashier: "I'd like a pack of cigarette papers please". And she said "Oh, rolling your own?? Don't worry honey, I used to buy these, too, until I couldn't afford what you put in them anymore".

She was such a nice lady....

My Grandfather Joe

This old guy is exactly the same type of guy as my old grandfather Joe. He died in the mid 80's. He was the type of guy who would pick on you even if you minded your own business. Me as the artistic, sensitive type, i was always the object of his mean-ness. Back when he was a little boy (ca. 1900), it was the era when little boys were dressed to look like girls. There was a photo of him in my grandmother's house with his hair done up in curls and a hair bow, and a dress-looking type of outfit. He looked like Shirley Temple.......

Life lessons I learned on 70's TV

"Not everyone's going to like you" - One Day At A Time

"You know, Kip, there's going to be many things in your lifetime worth fighting for, and many causes to stand up for. But you better choose your fights carefully, because you're not going to win them all. Remember that." - Bosom Buddies

"You shouldn't put down a loser Cindy. You might just be one yourself someday." - The Brady Bunch

"Well, Lana, a leopard can't change his spots". "That's true, but he can climb a different tree every once in a while." - Three's Company

70s TV Show Line-up

The following is from an article about TV in the 70's (when there were actually decent things to watch):

"You could make a strong argument that during the early 1970s, CBS on Saturday night had the single best night of prime-time TV ever: "All in the Family," "M-A-S-H," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "The Bob Newhart Show" and "The Carol Burnett Show."

When life imitates art (or vice versa)

In the mid 90's, I worked at a donut shop in Orleans, Mass (as mentioned in my bio). I worked behind the counter like the guy in the photo, but i didn't wear that hat or dress in white. This shop is EXACTLY the same as the one I worked at. It was called Sunrise Donuts. It's still there today. I also worked the evening shift (can you imagine working evenings in a donut shop????????). The only difference is there was a door in the corner right behind the guy sitting by himself. There was an inside door exactly where the one pictured is. It's uncanny. On the job application there was a question: "Why do you want to work at Sunrise Donuts?". I wrote: "Because donuts make the world a better place". I didn't sell many donuts, but I sold alot of coffee.

Free To Be You And Me

In 1972 (or was it '74?), Marlo Thomas and her friends came out with "Free to be you and me". It was a one-hour long special targeted towards young children. It's goal was to help us accept ourselves despite our flaws.

Rosey Grier told us that it was allright to cry, it would make us feel better. Alan Alda taught us it was okay for boys to play with dolls, and Michael Jackson sang of the fact that he didn't need to change at all, he was fine just as he was...... (yeah, right, Michael!).

I never had this album but my cousins had it. I saw a re-run of this show on TvLand a few years ago. It's interesting to note that Michael Jackson's name is not given credit on the front cover.

Mothers and caterpillars don't mix.

In the summer of '74, we lived in a split level home. Off the upper level, from the dining area, was a sliding glass door that led to a deck. Mom used to sunbathe and fall asleep. One day, while she was sunbathing (and sleeping) my friends and I were playing with caterpillars. We went up onto the deck where mom was, and i placed a caterpillar on her stomach. We were standing around her in a circle to see what would happen. She opened her eyes, looked down at her stomach, and panicked. I got in so much trouble, especially when we started to laugh. I heard my first 4-letter words that day. I was grounded for the rest of the day. I was a pretty rotten kid. I don't think my friends were ever allowed over after that day. Come to think of it, mom was always fair skinned, and after all that sunbathing, I don't ever remember seeing her with a tan....

Caterpillars and Huffy Bikes

In the early 70's, our family moved into a new house (we were always moving. As a kid I think I lived in 5 different places). Me and the kids across the street used to ride our bikes in my driveway. I had a "Huffy" bike. Anyone remember those? They were sort of like the first mountain bikes with the thick "knobby tires". And it had a big sort of plaque with a number 3 on the front between the handlebars, like a race car number (i really don't know why). I also had one of those really tall orange flags (like 6 feet tall) attached to the back of my bike. It kept falling off though. Dad could never get it to stay on. My friends and i used to lay caterpillars on my driveway and run over them on our Huffy bikes. I'll always remember their green innards that used to squirt out of their heads and back ends. Sometimes we would ride over them in really slow motion to elongate the process. My driveway looked like a war zone (for caterpillars, that is).

1974 Madness
(What were we thinking?????)

Back in late June of 1974, my grandfather Joe was employed as a custodian of a Taunton elementary school. Because school was almost out for the summer, the school system gave my grandfather three or four milk crates stocked with milk in those little milk cartons that were served at lunchtime. There must have been 60 or 80 of them, and my grandfather in turn gave them to my dad. Dad came home and they were back in the bed of his pick-up truck. He went inside, and me and my friends were hanging out outside. We ended up opening every single container and poured them into the bed of the pick up truck. We didn't tell him we did it, and it sat overnight and curdled. I've never smelled anything so bad. The truck stunk for over a week, to this day I can still smell it.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show Theme Song

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big,
girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

Memorable lines from 70's commercials

These are just a few that I remember:

  • "Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce. Special orders don't upset us. All we ask is that you let us serve it your way."
  • "You've got ring around the collar."
  • "You deserve a break today."
  • "When I bite into a York peppermint patty, I get the sensation of....."
  • "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!"
  • "Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!"" No, YOU got YOUR peanut butter in MY chocolate!"
  • "I'd like to build the world a home, and furnish it with love - grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I'd like to buy the world a coke and keep it company."
  • "Please don't squeeze the Charmin!"
  • "My baloney has a first name, it's O-s-c-a-r, my baloney has a second name it's M-e-y-e-r. Oh I love to eat it every day and if you ask me why I'll say, 'cause Oscar Meyer has a way with b-o-l-0-g-n-a! How's that?"
  • "You're soaking in it."-Madge from Palmolive
  • "Calgon, take me away!!!!!!"
  • "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never never never never let you forget you're a man, 'cause I'm a woman."
  • "Nothing gets between me and my Calvins."
  • "Hershey is the great American chocolate bar."
  • "Raisins, nature's candy."
  • "That's funny, Frank never has a second cup at home......"
  • "Lee-ee-ee-ee-ee-vi's!"
  • "Thanks, Mr. Easter Bunny!"
  • "With milk chocolate that melts in your mouth, not in your hands."
  • "Double your pleasure, double your fun."
  • "Just a sprinkle a day helps keep odor away."
  • "It's not NICE to fool Mother Nature!"
  • "Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weiner, that is what I'd truly like to be. For if I were an Oscar Meyer weiner, everyone would be in love with me."
  • "One day, I woke up with a big pimple, I was upset, I had to get, something with benzoyl peroxide, something strong, and something fast. Stridex BP was the thing for me! Stridex BP, it dried my pimple fast. Stridex BP (it works so hard), Stridex BP (it works so fffaaasssssstttttt!!!!!). Try it and you'll see that nothing beats Stridex BP!"

McDonald's promo glasses
(real glass before the days of lawsuits). Posted by Picasa

These glasses are circa 1976/77. McDonald's used to sell these, I think, for a dollar. Back in the day I had the hamburglar glass and the pirate (used to have. Not many people held on to these things). They stopped selling these types of glasses (real glass with painted images) after a few minor incidences of children being poisoned by the paint - another classic case of a few ruining it for the rest of us .. . . ......

Grizzly Adams, my hero. Posted by Picasa

"Deep inside the forest is a door into another land, here is our life and home.
We are staying here forever in the beauty of this place all alone.
We keep on hoping that maybe there's a world where we won't have to run, and maybe there's a time to call our own, living free and harmony and majesty. Take me home, take me home." Grizzly Adams ending theme song

While other kids dreamed of being Joe Namath or OJ Simpson, I fantasized about being Grizzly Adams. I dreamed of heading into the woods, building a cabin, and of course hanging out with bears. . ... I watched this show for 2 years. I don't really remember when this show was popular but i would say it ran from about '74 to '77.

Now I do live in a log cabin in the woods and I do have a beard. No bears but my dog is named Bear. And I don't make my own clothes. Other than that there are many similarities (except that I haven't ever been falsely accused of murder and i'm not a fugitive from justice).

A 1973 Christmas present.

At long last, Captain Peg Leg!!!!!!! Posted by Picasa

Matchbox Fighting Furies Capt. PEG-LEG 1973 MIB!!!

I received this action figure in the Christmas of '73, so I was 6 years old. I had always remembered this figure but I forgot it's name and manufacturer. I just figured it out through some detective work on ebay (that's where I get many of my photos for this blog). This guy had a removeable peg leg with a 'treasure map' inside. I unscrewed his leg so much my mom would say: "Joe would you quit playing with that damn leg, you're gonna break it!!".
Mom had such a way with words.

Miniature Golf and ice cream - a saturday night staple on Cape Cod in the summer.

I just loved miniature golf.Posted by Hello

(Click on the picture for a larger view.)

When I was a kid I loved miniature golf! We always played when we would go to Cape Cod, Mass in the summer. We would go out for ice cream and buy a tee-shirt, then go and play miniature golf.

My great grandfather built a house in Chatham, on Cape Cod, in the late 50's. It was a Cape style house, and it had 2 bedrooms upstairs. In one of the bedrooms, in the closet, was a narrow 5-foot-long hallway that led to a little door. That door opened up into a small 6 x 6 room with a little chair and a dim lamp. My cousin DeeDee used to read in it, but I never did. It was a little too dark and creepy for me. Rex had a restaurant in Harwich on Route 28 for many years, and some people still remember it. It was called 'The Rexford', and I'm told they had great pancakes, but I wouldn't know. Rex had a weird rule about family eating in the dining room, even if we paid. Very strange. My mom, aunts and uncles would work there in the summer and Rex would house them (the old-fashioned teen age working summer). He sold the restaurant when I was 9, so I never worked there myself. Not that Rex and I would ever have made it together anyway.

I am a Cape Cod native myself, and even though my family has a history on the Cape, only a handful of our relatives were actually born there. Cape Cod was a magical place in the early 70's (back when you could afford to buy a house). The Chatham house was only 3 blocks from Hardings beach, and we would either drive there in the Volkswagon station wagon, or we would just walk. There also was a harbor down the road, and there was a field along the way where we would pick 9 foot talls cat-tails and reeds.
I miss those days.

Cape Memories

When i was little, and my parents used to go to the Cape on weekends in the summer (to the Chatham house with the creepy closet room), they would play cards at night, smoke (with the windows closed) drink, and watch tv. On Cape Cod in the early 70's - pre cable - there were only 3 stations, only one of which came in decent.

On that channel, they would have the Lawrence Welk show playing. I remember hanging out with my folks, with Lawrence Welk on the TV and thinking: "Man, i gotta get outta this place." Every adult had their 'favorite' singer. It all was so sad. I remember being on the top of the stairs, balacing myself with my heels hanging over the edge of the top step and slipping, falling all the way down to the bottom. I remember mom running after me as i rolled like a tumbleweed.

THE album of '77 (or was it '78?)

I could never figure out what he's pointing at...... Posted by Hello

This movie could never hold water today, but it sold a ton of albums, and ranks up there in my mind as one of the best albums I've ever owned. It was a great era.

Happy 30th birthday, Jaws!! Posted by Hello

Because of my age, I was among the minority who did NOT see Jaws in the summer of '75. I saw it a few years later and it's probably been my favorite movie ever since. I often watch it because it reminds me of the way Cape Cod and the Islands used to be in the early 70's with the exception, of course, of all those nasty shark attacks...
It was 30 years ago this summer that this movie made history. I'm starting to feel my age.

Toys For A 70s Kid

A childhood classic Posted by Hello

I loved board games. I had this game as a kid. Never liked the show but somehow I ended up with all the merchandise. I had the Partridge Family game, the lunchbox, and a 45 record. I don't have any of these items anymore.

Rememberances Of A 1975 Latch-Key Kid

I was a latch-key kid. I remember ca. 1975/76 I would come home from school and mom would leave the house key under the welcome mat. I was around 8 years old. Mom and dad both had to work, so I came home to an empty house. I would let myself in the house and call mom at work to let her know I came home safely. I would watch The Brady Bunch reruns, and mom would come home 30 minutes later. One day mom forgot to leave the key so I was locked out of the house. It just so happened that it rained that day. I cried.

One Of My Favorite Lines .....

Get Fuzzy by Darby Conley

Satchel has issues Posted by Hello

Get Fuzzy is one of my all-time favorite strips. If I wasn't allergic to cats I would have one. I love cats. If you click on the cartoon a larger version will pop up.

The 1976 BiCentennial

You name it, they made it. Posted by Hello

As early as 1974, manufacturers started to gear up for the nation's upcoming BiCentennial milestone. Everything seemed to come in a "Special BiCentennial Commemorative Edition", whether it was collectable plates, cookie tins, beer cans, colored bottles with corks in the top (mom had 8 of those bottles and i pushed the corks down into the bottles and she couldn't retrieve the corks from inside the bottles so they were all ruined.... after all, I was only 8), candy bar wrappers, flags, belt buckles, playing cards, ceramic tiles, soda bottles, cereal boxes, etc. The list was endless. It was all pretty worthless junk, and the actual event itself seemed overshadowed by all the hype and marketing.
