Come fly with me...

I remember quite a few airplane interiors (and hotel lobby carpeting) back in the 70's that had pretty much the same pattern..

I don't know about you British...

Maybe i'm just closed-minded, but I don't think I'd like to eat that..

Random:

Kermit was always on the scene of exciting news as it broke. I seem to recall this "broadcast" where Rapunzel gets so fed up with people asking her to let down her hair, she cracks and says something like "You want it?! You want me to let down my hair??!! Fine! Here, take it!", then throws her wig to the ground..

In 1974, all of a sudden we were supposed to learn the metric system. Even McDonald's got in on it. Thank goodness that's over with, because I was totally lost on all of it..

Ever tried to lift one of these things???

Even up to the mid 70's, they were still making console televisions. This baby is a 1974 Zenith. Not many homes didn't have either console televisions, or console stereos, or both. They weighed a ton, btw.

Back in the early to mid-70's:

Whenever mom would make corn muffins in the morning, it was always a special day. Either it was a Saturday, or summer vacation. I make this stuff but in a loaf pan.
Screw the muffins...
Goodbye Farrah, we'll miss you.

Bic Banana pens:

We always had one or two of these lying around the house back then.

You're looking lovely today, Mrs. cleaver..

I don't know how many times I watched Looney Toons back then, but no Saturday morning would have been complete without them.

I miss summer vacations...

Now that school is out, I remember when this would be a typical summer's day when I was a kid (notice no computer or video games). I really miss those days, sometimes...
Btw, if the pic's a little bright, sorry. It's the best I could find...

Misty, water-colored memories:

I had one of these. I can't remember if I had Fred, Barney or Dino. And I can't remember if it was blue, yellow or red. I'm not sure how old I was at the time, either. Yes, I'll never forget it..

I'm more of an Oscar....

One of my faves, I love watching it. Everytime I watch this show it seems to hold up well.

Benji:

I liked this movie. I also had the Benji stuffed animal.

The Ice Cream Man:

Summer as a kid wouldn't have been complete without the ice cream truck.
The real ones. That serve ice cream.

Fernwood 2Night:

I liked them all, but I think the Salvation Army Band that played Creedence was probably the best guest.

Fred Sanford:
"The Who's Who Of Watts"
Max asked me to do a post of "platform shoes with a goldfish in the heel", and figured I'd check it out. Yes, they apparently do make these.
I'm guessing that's a fake fish..

Back in 1978:

My cousin used to stay at our place sometimes. One morning in the summer - folks were at work - we found out you could dial a code on the phone and get a weather forecast and the time. We must've dialed it for an hour. We didn't know each call was 50 cents, either. When the folks got the phone bill, there was a $25.00 charge.
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine, He gets me my drinks for free, And he's quick with a joke and he'll light up your smoke, But there's some place that he'd rather be. He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me." As his smile ran away from his face "Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star If I could get out of this place".

I know you know this...

Before we had Marge Simpson, we had Brenda Morgenstern. Nobody knew back then the success Julie Kavner would have later with The Simpsons. I remember one episode of Rhoda when Brenda woke up all hungover, and drank from the goldfish bowl... I laughed my ass off.

In my opinion:

The coolest character Elizabeth Montgomery ever played was Sam's cousin Serena on Bewitched.

Random observance:

Between you and me, Mr. Whipple seemed to get a little too much excitement whenever he 'snuck a squeeze' (if you catch my drift)... in retrospect, it all just seems so dirty...

"I wish... I wish... I wish.. I were a fish"

The Incredible Mr. Limpet was another great Saturday Afternoon Movie that was played alot when I was a kid. I used to think that would be so cool to turn into a fish.... except that it's so cold and dark down there...

Um, I never had one of these, btw, I swear....

In the 70's, gals were re-cycling their denim jeans and making them into handbags. On another note, it's funny that people use the term denim jeans. Like what else are jeans made of???

Flashing:

Flashing and streaking was very in-vogue in the 70's. Um, I never did that, btw.... my parents wouldn't let me..

Misc.:

One of my favorite stories as a kid was The Three Little Pigs. I'd love to live in a little house like that.
Without the pigs, of course..

Pimp my ride:

In the episode of The Partridge Family, when they first get the bus, Shirley Jones walks out of the house to find that the kids have painted the bus in a Mondrian pattern. But anyone could tell that this was a factory job. Nobody could do that kind of a job free-hand...

1975:

It wasn't a bad year. It was just the calendar that sucked...

Sorry Charlie:

Starkist "Sorry Charlie" commercials ran throughout the decade. Between you and me, there was something majorly disturbing about a fish wanting to eat it's own kind... it just seemed so unnatural..

June 1 - 6, 1974:

Okay, so it wasn't a great week for everyone. As a side-note, I don't recall that much of a difference in their heights.. maybe the artist favored Cher more than Sonny, who the hell knows..

Another Hawaiian Punch ad from 1969:

I found the above ad when I was searching for Hawaiian Punch rafts. On a side-note, does the woman in the center look exactly like Laura Bush or what???
This is an original cel from a 1969 Hawaiian Punch commercial. I think the guy on the raft was always getting punched out by the Hawaiin Punch guy.

Hawaiian Punch rafts:

These things were everywhere circa 1976, as well as Budweiser beach towels. These rafts were made of canvas. Other than that, there's really not much more to say on the subject...

Rotary phones:

If you say "rotary phone" to someone who was born after 1981, they will look at you like you're speaking Latin..

Random (but then again isn't everything on this site):

In the summer of 1976, this song was on the radio constantly.... not that I minded, of course.

The Love Bug:

I don't remember this movie too well, but considering the last pic I posted was so disturbing, I just had to post something else...

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

1975:

I, I, I'm just a love machine
and I won't work for nobody but you
I'm just a love machine, yeah, baby
A hugging kissing fiend!

I don't know, he looks pretty heavy to me...

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
(Who knows when)
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

The NBC Peacock:

This is how the peacock looked when I was a kid. In my earliest memories, I remember that TV shows used to advertise that they were in color, which really didn't help much if you had a black-and-white television.... I'm not sure if they even make black-and-white TV's anymore. I also remember TV's had dials, not push buttons. And forget about remote controls, they didn't exist until much later. Between you and me, even though I love doing this blog, sometimes my posts make me feel SO old....
