Using my blog to try and make the world a better place. If I can help someone forget their troubles for a few minutes a day, it's all worth it.

If you ask me...

... back in the day, some people took the Frisbee a little too seriously..

Stuff I had:

The Wham-O Moonlighter Frisbee. Think I got it around '77 for Christmas. Nobody questioned the concept of a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee since you don't play Frisbee in the dark. Unless you're stoned. But whatever.

Misc. Remembrance:

In the early '70s when I watched Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, I thought it was really cool that he had a traffic light in his apartment (which, when you think about it, if you're going to have a traffic light for private use you pretty much have to steal one because you just can't buy them in stores). I asked my folks if we could install one in our home and of course they said "no". I told myself that when I got older I'd have one in my place, but now that I'm old enough to make that call, for some reason it just doesn't seem that important as it used to be..

As I recall...

... back in the day, digital watches were very expensive. And most, in retrospect, were extremely ugly. I'm not sure if they make them any more, but then again not many people these days wear watches except as a fashion accessory. The list of common everyday staples of life from back in the day that are becoming (or have become) obsolete is steadily growing: watches, rotary and land line phones, black-and-white televisions, typewriters, record players, newspapers (even magazines are on the decline). And to be honest I don't recall the last time I've seen an ash tray being for sale in a store. I can't really say that I miss them though. Especially the ash trays.

Onset Beach:

Back in the day my grandparents used to take us to Onset Beach in Wareham. It was a lot closer than the beaches on Cape Cod. I haven't been there since around '79, but back then it was always packed with people. As I recall the Kayak Center used to be a restaurant / snack shop, and my grandmother used to give me 45 cents to buy a frozen Milky Way bar. I don't know if you've ever tried eating a frozen Milky Way bar, but basically they were so hard it was like gnawing on a block of plywood. To this day I have no idea why I never decided to buy something else, but she told me to get a frozen Milky Way bar, and I figured she was paying for it so what the hell....

It's getting harder and harder to come up with stuff...

... but I just remembered how, in the late '70s (ca. '77), dad thought he was going to get rich selling Amway products. I don't think he sold anything except maybe some breath freshener spray and some cleaning agents (to his girlfriend), and I don't think his Amway career lasted more than 3 months. I still remember riding in his truck and in the center console were the Gordon Lightfoot 8-track tapes and the breath spray. Sorry it didn't work out for him but at least I got some free breath spray out of the deal...
