Using my blog to try and make the world a better place. If I can help someone forget their troubles for a few minutes a day, it's all worth it.

1975 remembrance:

We were at a vacation cottage on a lake. The adults had been drinking all day when they finally joined us at the lake. My cousin Karen was flying a Gayla kite (I believe the above pictured model), when mom slurred: "Let me fly your kite Karen". Karen reluctantly handed it over to mom, but mom wasn't coordinated enough and dropped the spool. The kite started to fly away. Mom would've tried to chase it, but she was in no condition to run after a kite (plus she would've dropped the drink in her hand). Karen chased it for a few hundred feet before everything flew out of reach, and the kite was gone. She was mad for the rest of the vacation. Yes, sucked to be her..

I don't know what Mr. Furley did to get that guy so upset, but I'm sure whatever it was, that guy deserved it..

Back in 1976...

.... Radio Shack thought the best way to target teenagers was to hook up with Arthur Fiedler....
... on another note, I wonder if the guy in the suit still has all that great hair..

Yesterday for lunch I made:

Hamburger Pie

1 unbaked pie shell
1 lb extra lean hamburger
1 can tomato soup
1 pkg shredded cheese
garlic salt, salt and pepper to taste

Line pan with shell, cook hamburger til done. add soup and seasonings. Simmer for about 5 minutes. pour in pie shell. cover with cheese. bake at 325 for 25-30 min. let sit 10 minutes before serving.

I found the recipe HERE.

Golden Age Cartoons
When I was 5, I thought it would be the life to hang with Yogi all day in the Park and do nothing but steal an occasional picnic basket...

Did any of you know...

.... that Roxie Roker, who played Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, was previously a cast member of The Electric Company??

I need a new suit:

I have no idea when this pic was taken, but I'm guessing it's circa '78. This'd be great for weddings. Without the binoculars.

Rocket pops:

I used to get these when we'd go to the beach, but I could never eat them fast enough, and they'd start to melt by the time I got half through the white. Usually I'd end up just burying the rest in the sand, and then go wash my hands in the water to get all the juice off them.. Mom would always get peeved when she saw I didn't finish it and tell me she'd never buy them for me again, but she always did. She just loved to bitch, for some reason.. she's just that way......

I'm not quite sure what they're singing, but it's probably "I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock and roll":

"I'm a little bit country
I'm a little bit rock and roll.
I'm a little bit of Memphis/Nashville
With a little bit of Motown in my soul"
This one's for Jim, who got me to thinking about this show. I didn't miss an episode. Marie was a very pretty teenager, until she got that god-awful bob towards the end of the show. I still remember Donny's purple socks, and how he was the butt of all the jokes that were rather insulting. Apparantly, his brothers were writing the scripts for the show and did whatever they could to make him look bad because they were jealous he was popular and they weren't... yes family can really suck sometimes......

"You're gonna make a fool of yourself, Eunice"..

The above is a pic from the episode of The Carol Burnett Show where Eunice appears on The Gong Show. She sang "Feelings".
And made a fool of herself...

Is it just me, or does Maureen look totally wasted here????

I was just thinking about:

Lynda Day George. It's been decades since I've seen her in anything. The few things I've seen her in (except for The Match Game, of course), her character usually dies a brutal death. In one movie, she was mauled by a grizzly bear, and in another movie she was making out with a guy in an RV that gets wiped out by a hurricane. I can't honestly think of any movie she was in where her character survived through to the end.....
She was also a regular in Mission Impossible, but I never saw her in MI because my folks didn't watch that show.
On another note, she had a very pretty smile. And incredibly white teeth..

Misc. 70's remembrance:

It was 1978, and me mom and my cousin Dee Dee (who's 2 years older than me) were sitting at the kitchen table in front of the sliding glass door, talking. Mom smokes Marlboro lights, and she was smoking a cigarette. Before she was done with it, she put it in the ashtray holder and said: "I've got to go out to the car for something", and left it in the ashtray burning. When she was out at the car, Dee Dee snuck a drag, but apparantly mom had looked around and saw Dee Dee smoking the cigarette through the glass door. When mom got back inside this was the conversation:
Mom to Dee Dee: So, how was the cigarette???
Dee Dee (shocked): I didn't smoke it.
Mom: Dee Dee, I saw you.
Dee Dee: I didn't! I swear!
Mom: Dee Dee, don't lie to me. I saw you do it.
Dee Dee (in a heartbreaking, wrenching voice): You think I'm lying!!!
Mom (laughing): Dee Dee, I saw you!
Dee Dee (same breaking, heart-wrenching voice): You don't believe me!!!!!
Mom: Dee Dee, I saw you do it!!!!
(Dee Dee starts to cry)
Mom: Ugh, whatever....

Back in the day, this would've never been allowed in our home. Ever.

Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine:

To be honest, I didn't have a clue just how much stuff I got when I was a kid, until I started doing this blog. I had a sno-cone machine, although I think this was a later edition than mine, but it was basically the same. Mine was circa '73. I didn't make many sno-cones with it, though. I remember just opening the flavor packs and drinking it straight. I was a non-conformist. A rebel. That's just how I rolled...

Felix the cat:

I seem to recall watching Felix cartoons on Saturday or Sunday mornings when I was very young (like 4 or 5), but I think they stopped airing soon after that, so I can't really remember any particular episode. I do seem to recall finding the little scientist extremely disturbing, and couldn't figure out why he was trying to go after Felix all the time.. I did like his hat, though.....

I remember when:

Prell shampoo came in a squeeze tube. It smelled different, too.

Only Herb Tarlek could have gotten away with wearing a suit like that...

In the 70's, shampoo ads were very artistic...

Does anyone else remember....

.... the episode of The Muppet Show when Mac Davis sang "Don't Get Hooked On Me" with Miss Piggy dressed as a mermaid while sitting on a fish hook??
