Mom had a few, and so did dad. She gravitated more towards Helen Reddy, while he was more of a Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot fan. I never understood why they only held 8 songs (8 tracks), because these things were so damn big you think they could have squeezed in one or two more songs on them.. I can still remember riding in dad's car and listening to Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind".

Maybe you are being sarcastic but "8 track" did not refer to the number of songs but rather the number of seperate audio tracks. Hence the ability to choose to play one of four (4) seperate stereo (x 2 = 8) programs.
Ah. Gotcha. Wasn't being sarcastic, just plain wrong... ;>)
Joe,
Have you ever been to the 8-Track Heaven website? I stumbled onto it one day and had fun browsing around over there.
Everyone always had those fancy velvet lined suitcases for the 8 tracks... like they were toting priceless heirlooms or something.
I've always been big on records, but 8 tracks seemed great at the time because you could listen in your car. My dad had a reel-to-reel... great sound, but a pain in the neck.
Hairball: No I had never heard of it before. I'll check it out.
Gil: That was the one thing that was cool about them, that we could listen to them in our cars. Dad had one in his, mom didn't.
My Daddy had one on his boat and he would crank Freddie Fender's 'Wasted Days and Wasted Nights' all summer long. That is, until my hot tempered Grandmother had finally had it and ripped the 8 Track out of the player and threw it in the middle of the lake.
hahaa
Only a grandma could get away with something like that..

My Dad loved that song too!
My folks got a free 8-track tape from Oldsmobile when they bought a car from them. Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation was one of the songs on the tape.
Rock the boat??? I loved that song.
I've got one. A Panasonic Dynamite plunger deal. Still works great. My most inexplicable 8-track? Captain Beyond!
I just loved it when my favorite song was split between two tracks.
Sleazegrinder: Captain Beyond?? Never heard of that one.
Goggles: Haha did that really happen? How sloppy of them.
My dad LOVED Olivia Newton John (pre-physical). I bet I have her 8-tracks memerized from hours in the car. "Have you ever been mellow?"
